Think Before You Speak

Day 13 · July · Proverbs 13:3

Today's verse

“Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.”

Proverbs 13:3 · NIV

The Story

Want to try an experiment? Grab a tube of toothpaste and squeeze some out onto a plate. Now try putting all that toothpaste back inside the tube. So, can you do it? You can't, right?

Our words are just like that: once we say them, there's no putting them back. That's why it's so important to think before you speak. Words can be like medicine, which helps and heals, like a compliment, a thank you, or an I love you, or they can be like a punch, which hurts, like a mean name, a lie, or teasing.

The Bible says that whoever takes care of what they say is taking care of their own life. Before letting a word out, you can ask yourself: is this true? is this kind? will this help or hurt? And when we ask Jesus to take care of our heart, it gets easier for good things to come out of our mouth.

A spoken word doesn't go back in, just like toothpaste. Think before you speak.

Today's Challenge

Think Before You Speak

Question: what good word did you say today, and what bad word did you manage to hold back? Whoever does it is today's champion!

Family Prayer

Lord, thank You for giving us mouths to say good things. Help our family think before speaking and use our words like medicine, not like punches. Set a guard over our mouths and fill our hearts with love, so that only good things come out of them. In Jesus' name, amen.
