Wisdom Pill · Day 8

The Ice Cream Ear

August 8, 2026 · Proverbs 8:9

“To the discerning all of them are right.”

Proverbs 8:9 · NIV

Before anything else: God loves you and likes talking with you. He doesn't speak in a complicated way on purpose, he speaks in a way you can understand.

Let me tell you something funny that happens to everyone, even grown-ups. Take a look at your ear.

When mom calls out from the kitchen, really quietly: who wants ice cream? You hear it right away, don't you? You don't even need her to repeat it. You show up in the kitchen in two seconds, like you have super hearing powers.

Now, when she says: time to put away the toys! Suddenly a mystery happens. The ear disappears. It seems like she spoke too quietly, or that you were too focused, or that you couldn't quite make it out.

Funny, isn't it? It's the same ear, the same person talking, the same distance. What changes isn't the ear, it's the willingness.

Today's verse is about that. God's wisdom isn't complicated, it's very clear. It's just that it only becomes clear to those who truly want to listen.

And here's something really good about it: you can ask God for help to have a heart that wants to listen. Obeying isn't boring when we understand that the one giving the instructions loves us.

Really listening is a choice, not an ear problem.

Challenge

Question: was it hard to listen the first time? Whoever listens the first time today already is the house's Ear on Duty!

Family Prayer

Lord, thank you for speaking to us in a way we can understand. Help our family to really listen, not just when it's what we like. Give us a heart willing to obey. And when we don't understand, help us to ask, instead of pretending. In Jesus's name, amen.
