Before anything else: God loves you, and he always shows the way when we ask him.
Imagine you and your friends are about to play a brand-new game. Except nobody read the rules, and the box has gone missing.
At first it even seems fun. Everybody invents their own rule and plays with plenty of energy.
But watch what happens after five minutes. One says you can move three squares. Another says you can move five. A third decides he can jump over everybody.
Nobody stopped playing, did they? Everyone is still playing, and quite excitedly too. It is just that now there is arguing, and in the end nobody knows who won.
That is what today's verse means. When there are no rules, the mess is not everybody standing still. The mess is everybody going in a different direction at the same time.
Do you know the best part? God's rules are not there to spoil the game. They are like the rules of the game itself: they exist so that people can actually play together and everybody has fun.
And Jesus said something beautiful: how happy are those who hear the word of God and obey it. Notice the word he used. Happy.
