Before anything else: God loves you exactly as you are, and his love does not change when somebody points out a mistake of yours.
Try an experiment right now. Try to see your own back without a mirror. You can twist your neck, you can spin around fast. It doesn't work, does it?
And here is the important part: that does not mean there is anything wrong with your back. It means only one thing. There is a piece of you that you will never manage to see on your own.
That is why it is such a good thing when somebody tells you your shirt is inside out, or that you have a leaf stuck in your hair, or that there is toothpaste on your chin.
That person is not criticizing you. They are lending you their eyes.
Except some people get cross when they are told. And then they spend the whole day with the label sticking out, thinking everything is perfect.
Today's verse is about exactly that. People come to grief because they stop caring enough to check, which means they think they already know everything about themselves.
And do you know what Jesus did? He told a story about a man who got so pleased with himself that he only ever talked to himself, and ended up throwing a feast alone.
But Jesus does not leave us on our own. He said: Listen! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and we will eat together.
He knocks on the door and waits for you to open it. Nobody was made to eat dinner alone.
