Before anything else: God loves you even when you promise something and cannot manage it. His love is not a promise that breaks.
You know when somebody asks you something and you say yes really fast, just so they will be happy? Something like: I'll bring you my game tomorrow. Or: I'll help you with your homework.
And then afterwards you realize it is not going to work. And you get that tight feeling in your tummy.
Do you know what most people do at that moment? They disappear. They pretend they forgot. They keep their distance from that friend.
Except there is a detail. The other person is still waiting. They might even have said no to another friend because of you.
And today's Bible verse teaches something really good and a little bit hard. It says: go quickly to the person and ask them to let you off.
Which means: speak up fast. Do not disappear. Walk over and say it like this: I promised, but I am not going to manage it. I am sorry.
Is it hard? Yes, it is. But it is much better than disappearing. Disappearing hurts the other person, and it hurts you too.
And here is something interesting. The faster you speak, the easier it gets. If you say it today, the other person just says that's all right. If you leave it for a month, they will have spent a long time waiting.
And do you know the best way not to end up there? Think for two little seconds before you say yes. Jesus taught it like this: "just say 'Yes' or 'No'."
