Wisdom Pill · Day 10

Need or Want

September 10, 2026 · For the grown-ups to read with the kids

Before anything else: God loves you and takes care of you every day, even on the days when you do not get anything new.

You know that moment at the supermarket? You see something on the shelf and you say: Mum, I need that!

And your mum answers: you do not need it, you want it.

It makes you a bit cross at the time, doesn't it? But there is a very easy way to tell the two things apart.

Needing is something that hurts you for real if it is missing. Food, water, somewhere to sleep, a coat in the cold, somebody to look after you.

Wanting is something that would be lovely to have. And listen: wanting is not wrong! Wanting is nice and it is part of life. It is just different from needing.

Today's verse says God takes care of what we need. He did not promise every toy in the shop. He promised not to let go of us.

And Jesus taught a prayer with that very word inside it. He told us to ask like this: "give us today the food we need."

Notice the two parts. The food we need, and for today. Not the whole week, just today.

And here is the loveliest part of all. Jesus said that the Father in heaven already knows what we need, before we even ask.

God takes care of what you need. And he already knows what it is, before you say it.
Family Challenge

Today's challenge is called Need or Want.

At the end, talk about it: what important thing do you already have that you had forgotten to be thankful for?

This time's challenge: Need or Want
Family Prayer

Lord, thank you that you know what we need before we even ask. Help our family to know the difference between needing and wanting. Teach us to be thankful for what we already have. And thank you for Jesus, who was thirsty on the cross because he loved us. In Jesus' name, amen.
