Wisdom Pill · Day 22

The Friend Who Flips the Board

September 22, 2026 · For the grown-ups to read with the kids

Before anything else: God loves you all the time, including on the days when you get angry.

Imagine you are playing a board game with a friend. Then he starts losing. And when he sees he is really going to lose, he shoves the board and knocks everything onto the floor.

Notice what happens next. First, nobody wants to play with him any more.

Second, whoever keeps playing starts playing in a strange way. Instead of playing for fun, they play scared, trying not to make the friend angry. Sometimes they even let him win on purpose.

And there is a third thing, the most important of all. After enough time together, you might start shoving the board too when you lose. Other people's anger rubs off on us.

Now listen to a very good story. Jesus had two friends exactly like that. They were brothers, James and John. Jesus even gave the pair a nickname: Men of Thunder. Thunder is that huge bang that comes with a storm.

One day a little village did not want to welcome Jesus. And the two brothers asked whether they could call fire down from heaven to finish off all those people. All of that over one closed door!

And look at what Jesus did. He did not send the two away. He talked to them seriously, showed them that it was wrong, and went on walking with them every single day.

It worked. Many years later, one of those two brothers wrote one of the most beautiful sentences in the whole Bible: "God is love."

The one who wanted to burn a village ended up explaining love better than anybody.

Jesus does not throw out the angry ones. He teaches the angry ones.
Family Challenge

Today's challenge is called The Champion of Losing Well.

At the end, talk about it: which was harder, losing the game or holding the anger?

This time's challenge: The Champion of Losing Well
Family Prayer

Lord, thank you that you love our family every day, and always the same amount. Help us to choose our friends well and to keep other people's anger from rubbing off on us. And when the anger is ours, teach us to breathe and to speak calmly. Thank you for Jesus, who never gave up on the Men of Thunder. In Jesus' name, amen.
