Wisdom Pill · Day 23

The Borrowed Bicycle

September 23, 2026 · For the grown-ups to read with the kids

Before anything else: God loves you the same amount every day, on the days you get it right and on the days you get it wrong.

Imagine you were given a brand new bicycle. Then a friend comes over and asks to borrow it.

Lending is a good thing. Somebody who lends has a kind heart.

But there is one detail: this friend does not know how to ride yet. And the street where he lives has a big hill.

If you lend it just like that, without thinking, the thing you never wanted can happen: the bicycle breaks and your friend gets hurt.

Notice that your heart was in the right place. What was missing was thinking for a moment first.

Today's Bible verse talks about a child who makes parents very happy. And it uses two words for that child: righteous and wise.

Righteous means wanting to do the right thing. Wise means thinking about the best way to do it.

Having only one of the two is not enough. It is like helping mum carry a full plate and then running with it.

And here is a story about Jesus when he was only twelve. He stayed in the Temple talking with the Bible teachers, listening and asking questions. Everybody was amazed at his answers.

And do you know what he did next? He went back home with his mother and father and kept on obeying them.

Look at the two pieces sitting there together: Jesus was clever and obedient at the same time.

Having a good heart is half of it. The other half is thinking first.
Family Challenge

Today's challenge is called The Champion of Thinking First.

At the end, talk about it: which is harder, wanting what is good or working out the best way?

This time's challenge: The Champion of Thinking First
Family Prayer

Lord, thank you that you love our family the same way every day. Help us to have a good heart and a good head at the same time. Teach us to think before we act, so that our help really helps. And thank you for Jesus, who knew how to be clever and obedient. In Jesus' name, amen.
