Before anything else: God loves you the same amount every day, and the love he has for somebody else takes nothing away from yours.
Imagine your mum gave a piece of chocolate to you and another piece to your brother.
Your piece was great. You were happy, eating slowly to make it last.
Then you looked to the side and thought his piece was bigger.
Notice what happens right then. Your chocolate is still exactly the same size. It did not shrink even a little. But suddenly it looks small, and the taste disappears.
That has a name, and today's Bible verse uses that name: envy.
Envy is that wish to have what belongs to somebody else, and it does a very annoying thing. It does not make your piece bigger. It only stops you tasting what you already have.
And look at the story Jesus told. A man hired people to work on his land. Some started very early in the morning. Others only turned up late in the afternoon.
When it was time to pay, the owner gave the same money to everybody.
The ones who came early got cross. But notice: they received every bit of what had been agreed with them. Nobody took anything away from them.
They got cross only because the owner was good to somebody else.
And the owner asked: "Are you jealous because I am generous?"
God is good to you and he is also good to your friends. There is plenty for everybody.
