Wisdom Pill · Day 27

The Wasp Nest

September 27, 2026 · For the grown-ups to read with the kids

Before anything else: God loves you all the time, and he looks after you even at the moments when you do not notice.

Imagine you are playing out in the street with your friends and you spot a wasp nest hanging from a low branch.

You have two options.

The first is to go round it and pass well clear, carrying on with the game somewhere else.

The second is to pick up a stone and hit the nest, so your friends can see how brave you are.

Now think about what happens with each one.

Whoever throws the stone gets about two seconds of applause. Then they run, they get stung, and everybody else gets stung along with them.

Whoever goes round it gets no applause at all. Nobody says "wow, look how he stayed clear of that nest". But nobody gets stung either.

Today's Bible verse is about exactly that. Sensible people see trouble coming and get out of the way.

Notice what the Bible is saying. Moving away from danger is not being scared. It is being clever.

And here is something not many people know: Jesus did this. When some people wanted to hurt him, Jesus left the town and went to a little place near the desert with his friends.

If Jesus went round it, then going round it is not cowardice.

Just one important thing. This is about danger. When you do something wrong, that is not the moment to hide, it is the moment to tell your mum or dad.

And there was one day when Jesus could have gone round it and chose not to: the day he went to the cross for you. He stepped aside when it was wisdom, and he stayed when it was love.

Going round it is not fear. It is a good head on your shoulders.
Family Challenge

Today's challenge is called The Champion of Going Round It.

At the end, talk about it: which is harder, going round it or putting up with nobody applauding?

This time's challenge: The Champion of Going Round It
Family Prayer

Lord, thank you that you look after our family every day. Give us eyes to see danger early and courage to pass well clear of it. Teach us not to do silly things just so other people will think we are brave. And thank you for Jesus, who stayed on the day he came to save us. In Jesus' name, amen.
