Wisdom Pill · Day 5

The Bicycle Brakes

Day 5, so Proverbs 5...

Proverbs 5:23 (GNT):

"They die because they have no self-control. Their utter stupidity will send them to their graves."

Have you ever wondered why a bicycle has brakes? They are not there to end the fun. They help you stop so you do not hurt someone. A trusted adult teaches you to use the brakes because they want to care for you.

Today's verse gives adults a very serious warning about choices that destroy lives. For us, the practical lesson is to learn to stop when an action could hurt someone. Feeling angry happens. Hitting a classmate or throwing a toy at them is a choice that needs to stop.

If you are very angry, step away from the game for a little while and ask a trusted adult for help. Later, when you are calmer, explain what happened. If you hurt someone, you can say sorry and learn to act differently. You do not have to pretend you felt nothing.

God loves you while you are learning and also when you make mistakes. His love is not a reward for good behavior. Jesus teaches us to care for people. You do not have to solve adults' problems: you can learn, ask for help, and practice care in the things children do.

Golden Phrase: "I can stop and ask for help before hurting someone."

Mission: Learn to Use the Brakes!

  • 1Think of a situation in which you often get angry, such as waiting for your turn.
  • 2Make a plan with a trusted adult for how to ask for a break and help.
  • 3Practice that plan today and share how it went, even if it was still difficult.

Question to discuss as a family: "Who can help you stop and talk when you get angry?"

"Jesus, thank you for loving me while I learn. When I get angry, help me stop and ask for help. Teach me to say what I feel without hurting people and to admit when I make a mistake. Amen."
