"Have I not written thirty sayings for you, sayings of counsel and knowledge, teaching you to be honest and to speak the truth, so that you bring back truthful reports to those you serve?"
Proverbs 22:20-21 · NIV
Solomon (or the sages he compiled) pauses to explain the pedagogical intention behind everything that was written. Wisdom has a clear mission:
Forming Character (Being Honest)
The goal of the study isn't intellectual, it's moral. "Teaching you to be honest" (or trustworthy). The wise person is one in whom total trust can be placed. He isn't fickle.
Enabling the Mission (Bringing Back Truthful Reports)
Back then, messengers were vital. If a king sent a messenger and he came back with lies or half-truths to please, the kingdom could fall.
"Good to Great" — Jim Collins
This verse is the foundation of a culture of excellence. Collins talks about creating a climate where "the truth is heard." Mediocre leaders surround themselves with flatterers who hide problems. Level 5 leaders want "truthful words." They need messengers (their team) with the courage to bring the brutal facts, because that's the only way the company wins.
"Especialista em Pessoas" — Tiago Brunet
Trust is the most valuable currency in relationships. If you aren't "honest enough to speak the truth," you lose your connection value. A specialist knows that truth spoken in love builds authority; lies told to please destroy reputation.
"The Knight in Rusty Armor" — Robert Fisher
For years, the Knight couldn't "speak the truth" even to himself, let alone to others. He lived off appearances. His journey was relearning how to be truthful. Only when he became capable of admitting the truth (about his fear and loneliness) could he return to "those he served" (his family and his life) as a free man.
Jesus Christ is called "the faithful and true witness" (Revelation 3:14).
He was "sent" by the Father into the world. And what was His mission? "The reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth" (John 18:37). Jesus never diluted the Father's message to please men. He brought back truthful words to the One who sent Him, fulfilling His mission perfectly. As disciples, we are "sent" by Christ. Our mission is to carry the truth of the Gospel, undistorted, into a confused world.
