Allergic to Lies: The Righteous One's High Standard

January 13, 2026 · Proverbs 13:5

“The righteous hate what is false, but the wicked make themselves a stench and bring shame on themselves.”

Proverbs 13:5 · NIV

Solomon raises the standard of honesty. It's not just about not telling lies, but about having a deep aversion to everything that's false.

The Feeling ("Hate")

The text uses a strong word. The righteous person doesn't just "avoid" lies, they hate them. It's like smelling spoiled food; it causes nausea. Whoever has a heart aligned with Truth can't stand living with half-truths, exaggerations, or fraud. The lie assaults the righteous person's nature.

The Result of Lying ("A Stench and Shame")

While truth protects, lies always end in stench (public exposure of the mistake) and shame (loss of reputation). The wicked think lying is a smart shortcut, but it's just a fast track to dishonor.

The Filter of Reality

Hating what is false means loving reality, even when it hurts. It's preferring a hard truth to a sweet lie.

The Connection with Books

“Empresas Feitas para Vencer” — Jim Collins

One of the main concepts is "Confronting the Brutal Facts." Mediocre companies lived off illusions (what is false). Great companies hated corporate falsehood; they put the truth on the table, no matter the cost. Without truth, there's no correct diagnosis and no growth.

The Knight in Rusty Armor — Robert Fisher

The Knight lived a lie (the image of a perfect hero). As long as he tolerated that falsehood, the armor didn't fall off. He only freed himself when he began to "hate" the lie of who he pretended to be and sought who he really was.

The Christ-Centered Connection

Jesus didn't just tell the truth; He said: "I am the Truth" (John 14:6). On the other hand, He called the devil the "father of lies" (John 8:44). Therefore, loving Jesus necessarily means hating lies. There's no middle ground. A Christian who tolerates "little white lies" or small deceptions in business is flirting with the enemy's nature. Having the mind of Christ means having an immune system that rejects any virus of falsehood.
