Proverbs of January · Day 18

The Unshakable Bunker: Where Do You Hide in a Crisis?

January 18, 2026 · Proverbs 18:10

“The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”

Proverbs 18:10 · NIV

Solomon makes a brilliant contrast here. In the following verse (v. 11), he says that the wealth of the rich is their "fortified city" (an illusion of security). But in verse 10, he points to the only real security.

The Name as Structure ("Fortified Tower")

God's "Name" isn't a magic word; it represents His character, His reputation, and His authority (Jehovah Jireh, El Shaddai). When everything crumbles down here, God's character remains unshakable. It's a tall Tower, above the flood level of problems.

Human Action ("Run to It")

God is the Tower, but we need to run. Faith is movement. It's not standing still waiting for the crisis to pass; it's moving intentionally toward God's presence through prayer and the Word. In a moment of fear, where do you run? To food? To your phone? To money? The righteous run to the Lord.

The Result ("Are Safe")

In Hebrew, the word for "safe" here means "set on high," "inaccessible." It doesn't mean the problem disappears, but that you're placed at a spiritual level where the problem can no longer touch or destroy you. The storm continues down below, but you're at the top of the Tower.

The Connection with Books

The Pilgrim's Progress — John Bunyan

On Christian's journey, whenever he faced mortal dangers, he needed to turn to the promises and to the King. The "Fortified Tower" is the refuge of the weary traveler.

"Ansiedade" — Augusto Cury

Accelerated Thought Syndrome (SPA) leaves us mentally unprotected. "Running to the Tower" is a technique for managing emotion. It's taking the focus off the problem (which generates anxiety) and putting the focus on God's sovereignty (which generates security). It's the place where the mind rests.

The Christ-Centered Connection

Jesus said: "And I will do whatever you ask in my name" (John 14:13). In the New Testament, the "Fortified Tower" gained an accessible name: JESUS. Acts 4:12 says that "there is no other name... by which we must be saved". When we run to Christ, we enter the fortress. He is our shelter from wrath, from sin, and from the fear of death. Being "in Christ" is being inside the Tower.
