The Rarest Jewel: Why Knowledge Is Worth More Than Money?

January 20, 2026 · Proverbs 20:15

“Gold there is, and rubies in abundance, but lips that speak knowledge are a rare jewel.”

Proverbs 20:15 · NIV

In this verse, Solomon creates a contrast between "price" and "value."

The Inflation of Gold

He says "gold there is, and rubies in abundance." Material wealth, though desired, is something a lot of people have. Luxury cars, beautiful houses, and expensive watches are assets that can be inherited, stolen, or won by luck. They're external.

The Scarcity of Knowledge

"Lips that speak knowledge" are the true rarity. Finding someone who opens their mouth and delivers direction, comfort, strategy, and truth is much harder than finding someone with a diamond ring.

Practical Usefulness

Gold buys medicine, but it doesn't cure depression. Gold pays lawyers, but it doesn't prevent crime. Knowledge (applied wisdom) prevents the problem before it happens. A sentence spoken with knowledge can save a marriage, close a million-dollar deal, or rescue a child. That's why "wise speech" is the most valuable asset in your portfolio.

The Connection with Books

“Empresas Feitas para Vencer” — Jim Collins

Many companies had plenty of capital (gold) and cutting-edge technology (rubies), but they went bankrupt. Why? They lacked the right knowledge (the Hedgehog Concept). They lacked leadership that knew what to say and where to go. Money without the direction of knowledge just accelerates the disaster.

The Knight in Rusty Armor — Robert Fisher

The Knight had the shiniest armor in the kingdom (status/gold). But what good was that precious metal if he was dying, suffocating inside it? What saved his life wasn't the gold, it was the knowledge he gained on the Path of Truth. Insight is worth more than image.

The Christ-Centered Connection

Christ is described in Colossians 2:3 as the one in whom "are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge". Jesus left no monetary inheritance for His disciples (gold), but He left His Words. "The words I have spoken to you, they are full of the Spirit and life" (John 6:63). Gold and precious stones stay on earth when we die, but the Word of Christ (eternal knowledge) crosses eternity with us.
