Solomon invites us to audit what we're handing over to the world and to the people around us. The central question is simple: are you a fountain or a drain?
The Verb "Spread"
Wisdom isn't selfish. The truly wise person doesn't hoard knowledge just to look superior: he "spreads" it. He teaches the team, instructs his children, shares his successes and even his mistakes so others can learn. Whoever has wisdom acts like a fountain that overflows life onto everyone who comes near.
The Fool's Drain
The verse says the fool's heart is "not so." The fool acts like a drain: he sucks the energy out of a room, he spreads gossip, complaints, and pessimism. When he opens his mouth, he doesn't add a single milligram of value to anyone's life, because there's nothing useful stored in his heart. He drains where he should have supplied.
The X-Ray of the Heart
Solomon contrasts the lips of the wise with the heart of the fool. The mouth is just the storefront of what's in the heart's stockroom. If you want to know what dominates a person's mind, just listen to what they spread when they speak. The cure begins in the stockroom, not in the storefront.
The mouth is the storefront of the heart. If the heart is full of Christ, the words won't spread fear or division: they'll spread life.

Mediocre companies operated on the "genius with a thousand helpers" model. The selfish leader centralized everything to be the hero. Great companies, however, had Level 5 Leaders, who spread knowledge: they developed successors, trained the team, and distributed the credit. Their knowledge multiplied the value of the entire company.

The specialist knows how to map out who the "fountain" people are and who the "drain" people are in his life. More importantly still, he takes responsibility for being the greatest distributor of value in his relationships. He spreads words that build, heal, and direct, generating a high-trust environment around him.
In Luke 6:45, Jesus sums up today's proverb with surgical precision: “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart... for the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”
Jesus was the greatest Sower in history. He didn't hold His wisdom and grace back in heaven: He came down to earth to spread the Gospel, healing, and salvation to everyone who had ears to hear. As Christians, we're called to be those fountains on earth. If our heart is full of Christ, our words won't spread fear, lies, or division: they'll spread the life of God everywhere we go.
