Solomon doesn't just ask his son to know wisdom.
He asks two deeper things: that he keep it and that he guard it.
Knowledge that never turns into obedience is dead information.
And wisdom that isn't protected gets lost.
The promise comes attached to the command: “and you will live.” It's not a threat, it's a map.
Obedience doesn't imprison; it frees you for a life that works.
1. Obeying Is Living, Not Losing
The oldest lie is that obeying costs you your freedom.
Solomon flips that inside out: obeying is what produces life.
Whoever ignores the manufacturer's instructions breaks the machine.
Obedience isn't the bill you pay, it's the investment that pays off.
The right rules don't limit the game: they make the game possible.
The wise person doesn't ask “how far can I go without breaking the rule?”
They ask “how do I live fully within what gives life?”
2. You Protect What You Value
“Guard it as the apple of your eye.”
The original expression refers to the pupil of the eye,
the thing the body protects by reflex, before you even think about it.
Tell me what you protect and I'll tell you what you value.
You lock the car, guard the password, take care of your phone. And wisdom?
It's left lying around, unprotected, exposed to any distraction that wants to steal it.
Guarding wisdom is active, not passive.
It demands review, repetition, defense against the noise that wants to occupy your heart.
3. Teaching Has a Shelf Life — If It Isn't Guarded, It Evaporates
What isn't guarded gets lost.
You've heard sermons, read books, received advice that would change your life, and where are they now?
They evaporated because they weren't guarded.
Guarding is turning knowledge into habit, advice into a system, truth into routine.
It's writing it down, reviewing it, practicing it until it becomes part of who you are.
The wisdom that changes your life isn't the wisdom you hear, it's the wisdom you guard like a treasure.

Jesus told the parable of the treasure hidden in a field: a man found it, and in his joy
went and sold all he had to buy that field (Matthew 13:44).
The wisdom Proverbs commands us to guard has a name, and it's a treasure worth everything.
Paul reveals where that treasure is: guarding wisdom, in the end, is guarding Christ.
He is the most precious thing that exists.
And Christ modeled today's verse to the extreme: He was
“obedient to death—even death on a cross!” (Philippians 2:8).
The obedience that produces life, our life, was His.
Proverbs' “and you will live” is only possible because He obeyed first.
That's why His invitation is so personal: “If you love me, keep my commands” (John 14:15).
Guarding the Word isn't legalism, it's how someone who loves protects what's most precious.
Obedience stops being a burden and becomes an expression of love.
