Wisdom Pill · Day 25

The Chair Next to the Birthday Kid

August 25, 2026 · For the grown-ups to read with the kids

Before anything else: God loves you the same amount whether you are up front or in the back, and that never changes.

Have you ever been to a birthday party and noticed that there is one chair everybody wants? It is the chair right next to the birthday kid.

Imagine you run and sit there before anyone else. What a win, right?

Except then the birthday kid's mom comes over and says quietly: that chair is for the cousin who came from far away. And you have to stand up and go sit in the back, with everybody watching. You just want to disappear.

Now imagine the opposite. You sit anywhere, quietly, and start talking to someone. Then an aunt comes over and says out loud: come here, come sit up front with us! And everybody hears it.

Notice that in both stories you ended up changing seats. The difference is who told you to move.

Jesus told exactly this story to some grown-ups at a party. He had noticed the guests rushing to grab the best places.

It is much better to be called to the front than to be moved away from the front.

And you know the best part? You don't have to push your way to be seen. God knows you by name and knows exactly where you are sitting.

Family Challenge

Today's challenge is called The Lowest Place.

At the end, talk about it: was it hard to let the other person go first?

This time's challenge: The Lowest Place
Family Prayer

Lord, thank you that you know us by name and know where we are, even when nobody notices. Help our family not to push our way into being seen. Teach us to be glad when someone else is called to the front. And thank you that you lift us up at the right time. In Jesus' name, amen.
