The Honest Scale: Integrity in Business and in Life

November 16, 2025 · Proverbs 16.11

“Honest scales and balances belong to the Lord; all the weights in the bag are of his making.”

Proverbs 16.11 · NIV

This verse might seem focused only on ancient commercial transactions, but its principle is vast and extremely relevant for today. It teaches us about the source and nature of honesty.

"Honest scales and balances belong to the Lord"

This means that integrity, justice, and honesty in our relationships (whether in buying and selling, at work, or personal) are not human inventions. They are a reflection of God's character. When we are just, we are echoing the character of the Creator.

"all the weights in the bag are of his making"

The "weights in the bag" were the stones used to calibrate the scale. In other words, even the smallest unit of measure, the smallest detail of a transaction, must be under the scrutiny and principle of God's justice. There is no room for "small dishonesties" or "little white lies" we think don't matter.

This proverb calls us to live a life of total integrity, where every "weight and measure" of our actions and words is calibrated by divine justice.

The Connection to the Books

"Good to Great" — Jim Collins

"Level 5" leaders (the most effective) operate with brutal humility and unshakeable honesty. They use "brutal facts" (honest scales and weights) to make decisions, building companies that last. Dishonesty (rigged scales) is a shortcut to mediocrity and ruin.

"People Expert" — Tiago Brunet

Building trust is fundamental to being a people expert. Trust is built on "honest scales and weights." Lies, manipulation, or dishonesty destroy trust, and without it, there is no lasting relationship.

The Christ-Centered Connection

Jesus Christ is the perfect measure of honesty and justice.

He is Truth itself (John 14:6).

His life was an example of total integrity, without "false weights" or "rigged scales" in His words or actions.

He teaches us to be "salt and light" in this world, reflecting God's justice in every area of our lives, including work and finances.

God's "honest scale" shows us there is no room for dishonesty. Because we have been accepted by Christ and He has justified us, we are called to live a life that reflects that justice, being honest in all our "weighings" and "measures."
