Solomon reveals that he himself received what he's now passing on. The chain doesn't begin with him. A father who invests wisdom in his son understands that the most durable legacy isn't financial.
The Fertile Soil of Love: Verse 3
The phrase "cherished by my mother" shows vulnerability and preciousness. You were the only one, and even so your father invested in you. A father's time, attention, and words toward a son are the soil where wisdom germinates. Without that soil, the seed of wisdom finds nowhere to take root.
Survival Through Obedience: Verse 4
"Take hold of my words with all your heart" — not just the ear. "You will live" — obedience isn't just moral, it's a survival strategy. In a world of complex decisions, having the right code installed in your heart is the difference between success and failure.
The Active Pursuit: Verse 5
"Get wisdom" — an active verb. Wisdom doesn't fall from the sky; you go after it. It's a deliberate choice, a conscious investment. "Do not forget, do not turn away" — two protections: memory and loyalty. It isn't enough to learn; you must keep and honor what you've learned.

Collins discovered that visionary companies had leaders who "built clocks" instead of "telling time." They created systems that outlived themselves, passing on the vision and values to the next generation of leaders. Proverbs chapter 4 is exactly that: Solomon isn't just telling the time (giving advice), he's building the clock (transmitting Wisdom).

Vieira teaches that the results we have are a consequence of the beliefs we carry, beliefs that were installed by whoever taught us. The father who installs beliefs of wisdom, discipline, and responsibility in his son is accelerating the next generation's success. There's no greater legacy than a child with the right beliefs.
Jesus is the perfect fulfillment of this chain. God the Father didn't just tell the Son what to say: "For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken. I know that his command leads to eternal life." (John 12:49-50). Jesus received the baton from the Father and passed it to the disciples. The disciples passed it to the Church. The Church is passing it to you today.
The greatest inheritance you can give your children isn't a property or a bank account. It's a child who knows the Source of Wisdom and knows how to seek God. That's what never depreciates.
