The Sweet Poison: The Anatomy of Gossip

March 26, 2026 · Proverbs 26:22

“The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to the inmost parts.”

Proverbs 26:22 · NIV

Solomon gives us the perfect diagnosis of how defamation and intrigue operate behind the scenes of the human mind and organizations.

The Trap of Taste

Why does gossip attract so many people? Because it massages our ego. When we hear about someone's flaw, we secretly feel superior. Gossip is a "morsel" that offers a quick, addictive pleasure. It disguises our own mediocrity by focusing on the other person's mistake. That's what makes it so irresistible and so dangerous at the same time.

Toxic Digestion

Here's the real danger. Do you think gossip "goes in one ear and out the other"? The Bible says no. It goes down to the "inmost parts." When you hear a malicious rumor about a coworker or a family member, that information contaminates your subconscious. The next time you look at that person, your perception is already stained by the lens of gossip. The poison has been absorbed, even if you don't notice it.

The Leadership Diet

The only way to survive is to go on a strict information diet. The wise leader refuses the plate. He understands that whoever gossips to him today will gossip about him tomorrow. Gossip is never a sign of loyalty: it's always a sign of fragile character.

Whoever gossips to you today will gossip about you tomorrow. Gossip is never loyalty; it's always a warning about character.
The Connection with Books

“Especialista em Pessoas” — Tiago Brunet

A trusting environment is a leadership's greatest asset. The gossip is a corporate and family terrorist: he blows up bridges of trust. The specialist in people protects his ears. If someone brings a rumor, he applies the golden rule: "Have you already talked about this directly with the person involved? If not, I don't want to hear it." He cuts off the evil at the root.

“O Poder da Autorresponsabilidade” — Paulo Vieira

People with high levels of self-responsibility talk about ideas and projects. People with a victim mindset talk about people. Gossip is the official sport of those who have no results of their own to show. The self-responsible person has no time to taste this "morsel," because he's too busy planting his own crop.

The Christ-Centered Connection

In Revelation 12:10, Satan receives the title of "the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night." On the other hand, in 1 John 2:1, Jesus Christ is called our "advocate with the Father."

That contrast forces us to pick a side. When you take part in gossip, spread intrigue, or expose a brother's fault, you're doing the devil's public relations work. You're aligning yourself with the Accuser. But when you cover the other person's fault with grace, refuse to spread the rumor, and pray for whoever made a mistake, you're acting like Christ, the Intercessor. Your mouth was bought with blood to bless, not to devour your neighbor.
